The third annual Oakley and Shaun White Air + Style event took over the Olympic Bird’s Nest arena in downtown Beijing last weekend. Twenty-four of the world’s best riders traveled to China for the big air event, which featured a massive set-down jump, constructed of scaffolding and man-made snow. Over 20,000 fans turned out for the high-flying antics from riders including Mark McMorris, Stale Sandbech, and Ulrik Badertscher, who won
last year’s event.
The head-to-head format created an intense atmosphere where each run had to be executed perfectly in order to move on to the super finals, which pitted the top four riders against one another. Many of the riders projected to do well crumbled under the pressure, allowing sixteen-year-old rookie Yuki Kadono of Japan to rise to the occasion and earn first place and the coveted Air + Style champion ring.
“I am very happy about today’s win. It is a great honor to be the first Air + Style winner from Asia and the first to win an Air + Style event with a triple cork,” said Yuki after the event, in a release provided by Oakley. “I have only stuck [the triple cork] once before and am always afraid before trying this very difficult trick, which makes it matter that much more that I landed it today.”
